Pre-Moving Runs

August 29th, 2008

Assume: You can take the girl out of the city, but not the city out of the girl.

Somehow– a little surprising, but ultimately very fortunate– I really like Long Island. Two weeks ago, my internship ended and I spent most of the week running errands and getting things ready for my new home on campus in a land far, far away (or at least I think so) from New York City.

IKEA Run.

We finally made a trip to IKEA two Saturdays ago. The one in Red Hook, Brooklyn.

Some fruitful outcomes out our trip include: glass jars for…I haven’t figured out what to put in them yet; plastic food containers of many sizes; the ever important spice grinder. Read the rest of this entry »

So, Stride Gum must have been searching for Flickr photos of one of their latest flavors.

Well, You Gotta Have Friends

July 19th, 2008

Girlfriends.

If you want to go out and have a good time, sometimes you just gotta be with your girlfriends.

This was little wisdom that I picked up from work, which wasn’t surprising. As much as I like being in the company of my guy friends (btw, not only can I call them dude, but I’ve recently decided to start calling them babe– I’m that comfortable around them. :o) sometimes it’s just good medicine to be around other women. It was strange now that we’ve graduated from college, but in a very positive way. We’re all taking steps towards finding our passions and what career would be best for us.

Bryant park was surprisingly breezy and there were plenty of chairs in the shade. Since I got there early, I took advantage of the open space and took photos. The woman a few chairs away had the most amazing camera lens ever. Had I known this any sooner, I may have been rather self-conscious about my dinky, no fuss, no frills point and shoot of a Sony Cybershot. Someday, I’ll have a dSLR, but not right now.

We wandered for food, ultimately heading towards Grand Central Station and finding a nice deli just a few blocks away. The weather lately has been hot and humid– perfect skirt-wearing weather– so Irene and I had weak appetites. Read the rest of this entry »

Project Mango: Day 19

July 18th, 2008

It’s a baby plant now!

Cute, huh?

Cute, isn’t it? Dad says that the leaves were very, very small this morning, but since we’re going through a sort of heat wave, it has grown much more. I’m a little concerned about the color of the leaves. When I did this a long time ago (long story short: it was doing okay in a pot until the squirrel decided to come by and dig it up to have as breakfast one weekend.) I think the leaves were greener, but I guess this coloration seems healthy too. Let’s keep our fingers crossed. If this grows more, I’m concerned about what to do with it during the winter if they only thrive in hot, hot weather. :(

Hana Yori Dango

July 13th, 2008

If you haven’t heard, when my foreign language skills are not in use, my memory seems to give priority to food-related vocabulary and phrases.

Yesterday, Mom and I made a stop at Sunrise Mart. After browsing at their excellent selection of Japanese groceries and snacks, I ultimately decided to get dango! Hooray. I didn’t pay much attention to the kanji until I got home.

Bees, Tea and Celebrities

July 11th, 2008

Today is the day of many firsts. And thankfully, I had my camera on me!

Law and Order.

I finally spotted celebrities in Manhattan. Angela has been spotting them since we were freshman since her dorm was on Fifth Avenue. I had an earlier lunch hour than usual and there were camera crews outside my building. This happens pretty often in Lower Manhattan, but for once I actually saw and recognized the actors. :)

There’s Kathyrn Erbe on the left hand side. :)

Here’s a “action” shot of Vincent D’Onofrio and Kathyrn Erbe. :D

A few more photos can be found in my Flickr set. Read the rest of this entry »

Germination; Food Literature

July 7th, 2008

Project Mango.

Project Mango is going well. The injured seed is progressing much faster than the other two in terms of germination. I wonder if this has any implications in gene or hormone regulation. Doubt it.

Day 8

Food Books.

The Strand is closing their Annex location on Fulton Street by the end of this summer. Have you been to Fulton street lately? The construction is very heavy in the area and they’re working on the street and everything below it. This has led to fewer customers for the stores in the area, which is unfortunate, since it’s a nice street to walk down to go to the Seaport. Read the rest of this entry »

Project Mango: The Fetus

July 3rd, 2008

Last weekend, Mom bought a box of Phillipine mangos because they were ripening much quicker than the store could manage to sell them– so, they were on sale.

Some years ago, when I was old enough to hold a knife skillfully, but not yet old enough to say…take the Regents, I had Phillipine mangos for the first time. While watching television with my parents after dinner, we peeled and ate the golden, nutrient-dense orbs.

Despite the occasional fiber getting caught within my teeth, I actually really liked eating whatever flesh was on the stone at the end. And I guess when I was younger, I was very confident about the strength of my teeth– or maybe I simply didn’t care — but for whatever reason, I was determined to rip off the fibers on the very hairy part of the stone. So it was really by serendipity that I managed to open the stone and–for the very first time– see what a mango seed looked like.

It was like any other seed, shaped very much like a giant lima bean with a dark seed coat. It was exciting. So this is how a mango tree really begins? Awesome. I took some paper towel and a plastic container and was determined to germinate the giant bean.
