Balancing Food
August 29th, 2006 | by Loretta |I was short-changed at Space Market. I stood there calculating it in my head, three times. Yeah, it’s definitely not right.
The interesting thing about being short-changed lately (it happened before a few weeks ago somewhere else) is that my brain seems to know when something it’s quite right. It’s strange.
Anyway, I got my dollar back, no problem.
Space Market is a deli that I often go to if not for their nigiri sushi or rolls, then for their scones, granola yogurt cup or open salad bar, which is hot and cold. Since it was rather wet and misty today, I actually skipped over the unagi nigiri and went for something hot.

- Tortellini in alfredo with ham
- Salmon baked with lemon, onion and other seasonings
- Broiled brussel sprouts
- Zucchini
- Baked, seasoned potatoes (like home fries)
I couldn’t help but think of Robert and how he usually gets his food from an open salad bar. Often, there is much balance in colors and nutrients. It’s really something worth watching, at least once, because it’s done with such planning. And also it’s something I easily relate to, since there is some zen in food.
Balance is easiest to achieve by looking at color. That’s why the 5-a-day campaign tries to have us eat more fruits and veggies by reccomending we try every color of the rainbow. Also, good plating helps keep things separate so each item retains it characteristic flavors.
I thought the tortellini alfredo was a good idea– it’s a nice step away from using fettucini. I don’t think they added peas though. Oh well. The vegetables were okay, and yes, I really do like brussel sprouts. I’m suspicious as to why they’re so small and trimmed; they probably weren’t that fresh, so they had to remove a lot of the outer layers. Then again, maybe they just couldn’t find larger sprouts. My only complaint would have to be the salmon, which was fibrous due to being overcooked and it was salty from being over-seasoned.
Space Market is located at 1 University Place and features a variety of food that can get you through the day. Oh, if you’re wondering where generic drinks are (soda, water, beer…) they’re all the way in the back of the store. Far, far away.
