Apples and Apples

My favorite part about spending the weekend at home is being able to cook for myself and eat what I want to eat, being as creative or as minimalist as I want.

I dreamed about food right before waking up and realizing I was actually really hungry. Since being banned from making oatmeal with the microwave, I have resorted to the conventional cooking of oatmeal on the stovetop. Before falling asleep, I had thought about how to have my oatmeal.

Oatmeal with apples and raisins.

  • Rolled oats
  • Tablespoon of milk
  • Granny smith apple, diced
  • Raisins
  • Teaspoon of oat bran

My dad eats oatmeal every morning. But he just sticks to adding raisins and milk. When he remembers to, there’s oat bran and ground flax seed. It’s not that we’re health nuts, but we really enjoy our oatmeal.

Pots in sink.

The problem with cooking on the stove is there’s more to clean. Papa Bear uses the pot on the left and I used the pot on the left, because that’s just right for me.

Sure, we could reduce clean-up by making the same pot of oatmeal and then adding in the extras later. But even though we’re the earliest to wake up at home, we still wake up at different times. And also, Papa Bear (aka Dad) likes his oatmeal with a higher milk/water to oatmeal ratio.

I prefer mine to be thick, almost like a risotto or pudding, so that there’s no dripping and there’s some height when I spoon it.

Oatmeal, my waaaay.

About two hours later, I was feeling pekkish. I never really fill up on oatmeal. Mom says it’s because I don’t eat enough fat in my meals, so I don’t always feel full.

Since I used maybe 1/3 of the granny smith, I decided to make a sandwich with another chunk of the apple. For some reason, I was surprised at how eveningly my 1/8″ slices of apple were.

Peanut butter sandwich.

  • Apple slices
  • ~1 tablespoon PB
  • 2 slices of toasted bread

This is worth trying at least once. Just a thin layer on both slices of whole wheat 9-grain bread and then the apple slices placed inbetween. Cut on a slight bias upon completion and presto! Instant snackage.
