Steamed Buns

Just another type of food I forgot to add on the list of what Chinese people typically have for breakfast.

Glutinous rice-filled buns

These happened to be filled with a mixture of glutinous rice and shitake mushrooms. The shape? Well, they’re usually round, but these were crimped and teardrop in shape. I should mention these were bought from the store, pre-packaged. Bakeries and restaurants will usually make them by hand, so that they’re more regular in shape.

I’m not a big fan of these, mainly because the flour used to wrap the filling is refined carbohydrates. In other words, where’s my enriched flour? :(

Buns are generally either steamed, like these, or baked. If baked, they result in a golden, yellow color, sometimes darker on top due to egg wash. They can be filled with anything sweet or savory– egg custard, red bean paste, cooked veggies, BBQ pork, etc. My favorite would probably be sesame paste.

Still, despite the different varieties that are available, I don’t really eat these as much. However, I must say they make a pretty good snack.
