Salty Lemonade
July 15th, 2006 | by Loretta |At Thai Son, Ian inquired about salty lemonade. My best explanation was: it’s like lemonade…with a lot of salt. Needless to say, Erick and Ian looked at me with the yes-thank-you-Captain-Obvious expression.
Dad has offered me salty lemonade on multiple occasions since he started pickling limes for such purpose many years ago.
He tells me to drink salty lemonade if I ever get a cough or throat irritation. Really, with such high salinity, I’d be surprised if no bacteria died upon contact.

Note how mold grows on the uncovered parts that were not sterilized by heavy salting. And I would say about 98% of that liquid came from the limes themselves after my dad covered them in table salt. Dad usually does clean up work to remove the moldy stuff and it’s safe for drinking…not that I would know for sure because I never drink it. But my dad has survived many glasses of salty lemonade, so I’m sure it’s okay.
Anytime I so much as smell this stuff, I think about when I’m three and I unknowningly drank sips of it before. It’s one of those things that are so distinctly different from anything my palate will ever experience.
But um, yeah, I don’t drink this stuff.
If you’ve never had it, I recommend you try it at least once, because it’s really not that bad. You really do add some sugar to it before drinking. I think you dilute it with some water too. So it’s like a healthy cocktail, best avoided by those with high BP.
