Strawberries
July 1st, 2006 | by Loretta |When I a child, we had strawberry runners all over my backyard and in the early summer, they would often be ripe. We would pick them as they were ready to eat through the summer, until the season was over.
One morning, my mother and I sat at the small marble table in the kitchen. Dad was at work and my brother was at school. It was just the two of us and she told me they’re called strawberries, because they look like little straws are embedded in them. From there, we went through other fruit names and talked about why they were named as such. Blueberries, blackberries…I can’t remember what else. I was three and in one morning over fruit and cereal, I had my first etymology lesson.
Weekends are usually when I either eat the most, or eat the best. It is only during the weekend that we have time to go to the produce market and pick up vegetables or fruit to last us for the week.
This morning, my mother came back with 6 pints of strawberries that were on sale for $2.99. Pretty amazing.

It’s undeniable that they look like small, hearts placed into a bowl.
Last night, I had a strawberry craving after reading about then on dolenutrition.com. They’re considered a superfood, as most berries are, since they’re rich in antioxidants and vitamin C. Also, they can be used for facials, as they contain salicyclic acid or some other astringent-esque compound. One cup of strawberries will provide more vitamin C than you will need in a day.
Well, that’s nice. I just eat them, because they’re yummy.
